THOMASVILLE — Carly Berryʼs artwork is whimsical with a dash of odd, showcasing her penchant for alternate worlds — and pizza.
Berry, an artist from Tallahassee, Florida and graduate of Florida State University, will display her sci-fi inspired art exhibit at Grassroots Coffee Company. The public art display is part of Thomasville Center of the Arts bringing emerging artists from FSU through the “ART@WORK” exhibition series.
Berry debuted her trip into extraterrestrial life on July 13.
“It was actually a pretty good turnout,” Berry said of the exhibit debut, adding she was able to have an intimate setting with those interested in her artwork.
The debut beamed up attendees into another world.
“The show was really just inspired by sci-fi and daydreaming of different worlds,” Berry said. “I really wanted to kind of just transport people to a different environment.”
Along with the extraterrestrial creatures greeting eager coffee-seekers, Berry also has a pop-up shop set up. The shop features a variety of pieces — from ghastly yet cute animals and food concoctions to pop culture flair creations of “Star Wars,” “Stranger Things,” and “The Office.”
The eccentric artist also is crafting paintings with frames and pictures salvaged from thrift stores.
“With a pop-up (shop), it’s kinda how you market yourself,” Berry said. “People seem to like the thrifted pieces I’m painting on.”
Berry’s exhibit will be displayed at Grassroots until September 30.
Post art exhibit, Berry plans to continue her Etsy store to market her art. The name — “It’s Not That Weird” — came very organically, Berry said.
“It’s one of those situations where it found me,” she said, as a friend casually dropped the phrase when describing her online store.
Berry, also a freelance graphic designer, is looking to diversify her artwork and is looking at creating with different materials, such as lights.
“I want to create things that are more immersive then they are now,” she said.
