We cannot fathom the greatness of our God

Psalm 19:1 states: “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.” (read verses 1-6 for even more insight) God has revealed Himself to us through His creation as well as through the Word of God. Romans 1:19-21 states that God has clearly given us abundant evidence of Himself through His creation. Verse 20 states: “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.”

In the last few years we have seen unusual phenomenon in the skies of four Blood Moons, all happening on the major feast days celebrated by Israel (2014-2015). This past week, parts of the United States were privileged to experience a full solar eclipse. This is the first and only time that the U.S. was the only place in the world that this took place. People came from around the world as well from other parts of the U.S. who were not living in the band that would experience a total eclipse.

And next month, on Sept. 23, for the first and only time in all of recorded history (about 6,000 years), is there another phenomenon that is actually spoken about in Revelation 12:1-2. Two constellations plus five planets will demonstrate that our God has everything planned out from before time began and has caused these stars and planets to be aligned in a way that was written about 2,000 years ago.

I am not saying that I agree with any of the conclusions that writers have made concerning the four Blood Moons, the solar eclipse, or this alignment of the stars and planets, but simply that God is demonstrating His amazing power to His creation in such a way that not a single person is left without a clear witness that He is Creator and that He is sovereign. You can Google each of these occurrences and draw your own conclusions, but I simply wanted to draw our attention to the fact that we are in an unusual season of time.

Long before science was sophisticated enough to realize that the earth was round, the scripture actually declared that to be so. (see Isaiah 40:22) Further down in that same chapter, Isaiah declares (verse 26) that God has both numbered and named each star! (see also Psa. 147:4) We cannot fathom the greatness of our God, but He has certainly left us testimony. Science tells us that our universe is beyond our comprehension in its vastness and that it is still expanding! No wonder the Psalmist said “Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised. His greatness is unsearchable.”

I have observed in past columns that the whole ordeal that Job went through finally got him to the place where God challenged him into realizing how little he really did know and understand. After Job tries to defend himself to his friends, the Lord Himself begins to speak to Job and asks him questions that made Job realize that he really did not know or understand much about the greatness of the God who he loved and tried to please. For four chapters (Job 38-41) God reveals His omnipotence and majesty. Then in chapter 42, Job repents and declares (verses 5-6) “I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You. Therefore I abhor myself and repent in dust and ashes.”

Not only has God numbered each one of the stars and given them a name, but according to Psalm 139, He knows each one of us intimately. Verse 17 says: “How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them. If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand…” That is the God who came to earth as a man, as Jesus Christ, to die for us, so that we might be restored into right relationship with Him and enjoy Him and His creation forever!
