In a battle of ranked teams, the Turner County Rebels will host the Hawkinsville Red Devils in a key Region 2-A: Subregion A football contest Friday night at Alan Hobby Field in Ashburn.

Turner will go in as the eighth-ranked team in the state Class A Associated Press poll, while Hawkinsville will enter as the No. 3 team.

Both teams have similar records as Turner is 5-1 with the team’s only loss being 35-24 against Crisp County on Sept. 15, while Hawkinsville is 6-1 with the team’s only loss coming against Dodge County, 14-0 on Sept. 8.

“They are a good football team,” said Turner head coach Erik Soliday. “They have no weaknesses. They are real solid everywhere with no drop-offs anywhere. They are good everywhere.”

Quarterback Jim Henry leads the Red Devils. He is 55-for-108 passing this season for 775 yards. He has nine touchdown passes and four interceptions.

Kamron Riley is his favorite target as he has caught 27 passes for 428 yards and six touchdowns. Jalon Bradford has caught 13 passes for 136 yards and Alvin Lawson has nine catches for 106 yards and two scores.

David Grace leads the Red Devils in rushing with 733 yards on 154 carries.

Hawkinsville is 2-0 in the subregion after victories over Dooly County and Irwin County, while Turner County opened subregion play last week with a 20-13 victory at Wilcox County.

“It was a good game,” said Soliday. “Both teams played awfully hard and it was close all the way through. We were just fortunate enough to get the win.”

Having primarily been a throwing team all season, Turner switched over and primarily ran the ball.

Kevian Prather led the way against Wilcox with 219 yards rushing on 28 carries and one touchdown. On the year, Prather has rushed for 537 yards on 75 carries.

“Our line blocked real well, led by Keyshawn Odum and Dustin Ward, and Kevian ran the ball well,” Soliday said. “We were able to move it on the ground well.”

The shift to the run was in part due to the Wilcox offense.

“Their offense is really good,” said Soliday. “We had some pretty long drives and were able to keep them off the field. We didn’t need them to get too many chances with the ball.”

After splitting time all season with Adam Brock at quarterback, Jeremy Stevenson was the lone signal caller for Turner against Wilcox.

He was 5-for-12 in the game for 74 yards and had a touchdown pass to Dontavious Smith.

Smith has 20 catches on the year for 403 yards and five touchdowns.

Other leading receivers for Turner are Demario Barber with 18 catches for 229 yards and Hiawatha Parker with 12 catches for 147 yards.

Brock is 43-for-87 passing this season for 560 yards, while Stevenson is 29-for-50 for 513 yards. Stevenson has seven touchdown passes and no interceptions on the year, while Brock has thrown seven touchdown passes and has six interceptions.

“We wanted to get Adam some work at wide receiver,” said Soliday. “Jeremy did well.”

Soliday is looking forward to a tough encounter with the Red Devils.

“Everyone in our region is tough. It is a war every week,” Soliday said.

Game time will be 7:30 p.m.
