Masons to hold fundraiser Thursday
The members of Cairo Masonic Lodge No. 229 are holding a barbecue fundraiser on Thursday at the Cairo’s Farmers Market. Plates will include pork, baked beans, cole slaw, bread and pickles for $8 each and can be picked up from 3 to 6 p.m. They will also be selling slabs of ribs for $20 and Boston Butts for $25. Historical Society revives annual event
The Grady County Historical Society is reviving its tradition of their annual “Big Picnic” fundraising event and will hold the annual social in September at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John P. Bell Jr. The Bell home was completed in 2005 and was built on property previously owned by Bell’s father, John P. (Buster) Bell Sr. It is located just east of Cairo at 235 Hilltop Lane with sweeping views of the property that is used to raise cattle and blueberries. The picnic will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature a catered meal by Carol Oates and live music from father and son duo, Bret and Ian Batey. Door prizes will also be awarded during the evening along with a tour of the home. Tickets are $30 each and only 100 will be sold. The tickets are currently on sale at Miss Myrts, Center Drugs, Hester’s Insurance, the Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce and by members of the Grady County Historical Society.
Youth program accepting applications
Cairo High School students have less than two weeks to submit their applications to a youth leadership program, the Georgia Civic Awareness Program for Students, which has been developed by the Association County Commissioners of Georgia to address the need for increased civic involvement and awareness among Georgia’s youth. Applications for the local representatives are due Sept. 2. Students must be sophomores, juniors or seniors in high school to apply and applications are available at Cairo High School.
September is library card signup month
Less than half of the community has a library card for the Roddenbery Memorial Library. Library cards give you access to a wealth of print and digital resources, online language tutorials, online databases, DVDs, CDs, adult and children’s events, and much more! New library cards are free and replacement cards are $2.
College and career center opens Thursday
The official grand opening of the Cairo High School College and Career Center is 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., Thursday. The keynote speaker for the event will be Lt. Governor Casey Cagle. There also will be a tour of the new administration building and renovated facilities of Southside Elementary School held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. School personnel will be on hand at both facilities to provided guided tours and answer any questions. Allen Chapel to hold pallbearer turn out
The Allen Chapel Palbearer Turn Out is 3 p.m., Sunday. The Rev. Dr. Delise Cox will be guest speaker and dinner will be served following the service. Eveyone in the community is invited to attend this special service.
Reno Baptist holding revival
Reno Baptist Church will be having revival services through Wednesday. Services will be held at 7 each evening. The guest speaker is evangelist, the Rev. Mike Everson and a nursery will be provided.
Camp Heal to be held in October
Hospice of Southwest Georgia once againwill be hosting a camp for young people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Camp Heal will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Oct. 21 at Camp Piney Woods in Thomasville. The camp is free for children ages 6-17 and will feature educational discussions on grief and bereavement, an informal memorial service and other activities. NAACP plans Freedom Banquet in September
The Grady County NAACP will be hosting its annual Freedom Banquet on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. The banquet will be held at the Senior Citizens Center on 17th Avenue, NE in Cairo. Tickets for the banquet are on sale for $20 and may be obtained by calling Jennifer Baker at 224-1200.

Your library fines can be forgiven through Thursday at the Roddenbery Library with a yellow coupon that is found on the library’s newsletter. Pick up a newsletter today, check out what’s happening at your public library and get your fines forgiven. Valid only at Roddenbery Memorial Library and does not include fines from another library, lost or damaged items or collection fees.
Chamber to hold annual golf tournament in October
The Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce will have its annual Golf Classic on Oct. 26. The three-man scramble tournament will be held at the Tired Creek Golf Course with registration at 11:30 a.m. and tee-off at 1 p.m. There are several sponsorship opportunities available from the chamber, which will include the opportunity to include promotional items in the golfers’ bags.
