- Stephen Beck enters a Lowndes County Jail courtroom Monday, May 22, to hear his sentencing.
VALDOSTA, Ga. — Stephen Beck, the man who pleaded guilty to shooting Valdosta Police Officer Randall Hancock last summer, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and five years probation.
Beck, 22, heard his sentence Monday morning in a Lowndes County Jail courtroom. He remained quiet and expressionless throughout the sentencing.
Southern Circuit Judge Harry Jay Altman II passed down the sentence based on two counts: attempted murder and possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Hancock stood outside the courtroom after the sentencing and said that he’s not angry at Beck for what he did.
“I still harbor no ill will toward the gentleman. I think justice was served today, and I’m fine with everything” Hancock said.
Last July, Beck made a 911 call from Three Oaks Apartments about a vehicle break-in, authorities said.
Hancock, an 11-year veteran of the Valdosta Police Department, responded to the call and was ambushed by Beck, investigators said.
Hancock was shot multiple times, and he returned fire, injuring Beck. Both men were hospitalized but recovered from their injuries.
The violent shooting rocked the community and made national headlines.
It appeared to be a suicide gone wrong, as Beck told investigators he was depressed and planned the ambush with the hope that Hancock would shoot and kill him.
After eight months out of the cop car, Hancock returned to police duty in March, and he said it feels great to be “back in the saddle.”
“I absolutely love it,” he said.
