NORMAN, Okla. — State Sen. Ralph Shortey turned himself in to authorities Thursday on child prostitution charges resulting from a police investigation that found he offered to pay a 17-year-old boy for sex at a local motel one week ago.

Shorty, 35, a married father of three, was charged with felony counts of engaging in child prostitution, engaging in child prostitution within 1,000 feet of a church and transporting a minor for the purpose of prostitution.

Police said they found Shortey in a Motel 8 room in the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore with the teenager on March 9. Police said the room was reeking of marijuana.

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin and legislative leaders called on Shortey to resign from the state senate seat he has held as a Republican representing part of Oklahoma City since 2010. The State Senate stripped him of his Capitol privileges, including his committee assignments, office and parking space.

“This is a very serious issue before this house,” said Sen. Anthony Sykes, R-Moore, as he presented the measure imposing punishment for “disorderly behavior.”

Shortey surrendered to Cleveland County, Oklahoma Sheriff’s deputies at 12:16 p.m. Thursday. He was processed into the county jail and released two hours later on a $100,000 bail bond. He had no immediate comment.

The teenager was not charged because police said they considered him a victim.

According to a Moore police report, officers were alerted by the teen’s father that his son had entered a Moore motel room with an adult, later identified as Shortey.

Police approached the motel room, smelled marijuana coming from the room and knocked on the door. The police report said Shortey initially refused to open the door, saying he was in the room alone. Police gained entry with the motel’s master key.

Police said they discovered backpacks with condoms and lotion in them, and found evidence on the teen’s Kindle of an online conversation with Shortey.

No arrests were made at the scene, but following an investigation, an arrest warrant was issued.
