Shaw to head transportation panel

ATLANTA – Rep. Jason Shaw, R-Lakeland, will head the newly formed transportation appropriations subcommittee, monitoring how new revenues are spent. House Speaker David Ralston announced the new subcommittee earlier this year, adding that mass transit will be an important part of its work.

 

Willis to head chamber 

MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Moultrie-Colquitt County Chamber of Commerce has announced  the promotion of interim president Tommie Beth Willis to the position of president, effective immediately. She has served as interim president since April 1, 2016.

 

Park presentation planned

DALTON, Ga. — After the Dalton City Council meeting concludes at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, there will be a public presentation on plans for the park at Haig Mill reservoir. The project will be funded with $5 million from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) that voters approved in 2015.

 

VSU investigates forensics 

VALDOSTA, Ga. — Valdosta State University’s next Critical Issues in Criminal Justice Seminars will take attendees inside the world of forensic investigations, according to a press release. Members of the community who want to learn more about the topic are invited to a free sneak peek of the event, noon-4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, in the University Center Magnolia Room. From 1:30-2:30 p.m., Shannon Floyd, forensic specialist at the Valdosta-Lowndes Regional Crime Laboratory, will give a one-hour presentation about forensic investigations, a topic she will cover in more depth during the upcoming Critical Issues in Criminal Justice Seminar Series: Forensic Investigations on Feb. 3. She will discuss how forensics can be used to improve crime-scene investigations and evidence and explore some of the pitfalls within the science, according to the press release. Participants will have an opportunity to meet faculty from the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice. There will be refreshments and a chance to win door prizes. The Critical Issues in Criminal Justice Seminar Series will continue throughout the spring and summer. Participants interested in attending the Forensic Investigations seminar on Feb. 3 can register online at www.valdosta.edu/CJSeminarSeries. Advance registration is $300 for general admission, $150 for VSU alumni, and $75 for current VSU students, faculty, or staff. Employees from any Lowndes County criminal justice agency can register for a discounted fee of $225. Onsite registration will be available for an additional fee of $50. Registration includes continuing education unit credits, breakfast, lunch, and snacks. This event is presented in collaboration with VSU’s Office of Admissions, Dual Credit Honors Academy, and Pathways Program. It is funded by the Criminal Justice Outreach Program, which is supported by a 2016-2017 VSU Innovation Fund Grant.
