group meets twice a month

If you have a loved one battling with addiction, you are invited to attend the GSAAP Family Support Group Meeting, which is held on the first and third Mondays of each month at the Family Worship Center in Cairo from 6 to 7 p.m. 

Some of the topics discussed include: What is addiction? Am I an enabler? How can I let go? What is detachment? What can I say? and How can I help? The meetings are a safe place to come and share your struggles with others and pursue peace in the midst of your circumstances. For more information, call Linda Chambers at 977-2102.

Library to participate in family literacy program

The Roddenbery Memorial Library officials invite families to participate in the Prime Time Family Literacy Program starting next month. This very special program series is designed for families with children ages 6-10 to encourage reading and talking about excellent books together. Chamber banquet is

Jan. 23 

The Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce will hold its 91st annual Membership Banquet on Monday night, Jan. 23 at the Grady Cultural Center. In addition to this year’s featured speaker, chamber officials will announce the winners of the annual chamber awards such as Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, Farm Family of the Year, etc. The banquet begins with a cocktail hour at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner and the program and awards. Tickets may be purchased at the chamber of commerce on North Broad Street for $35 per person.

Tax assistance available at library

Tax season is here and once again this year, library volunteers, Roy and Marie Murphy, will be providing free tax assistance for senior and low income citizens. This service will be provided every Thursday from 10 a.m. until noon beginning Feb. 2. Visit or call the library at (229) 377-3632 for an appointment.

Chamber holding fundraiser

The Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce is holding its 20 Guns in 20 Days Raffle again this year as a fundraiser. The raffle will award a different gun every day for 20 days to ticket holders who have 20 chances to win. Only 1,000 tickets are being sold for the raffle so the odds of winning are very good for those interested in participating. Tickets are on sale now at Center Drugs, United National Bank, Scarbrough State Farm, Southern Insurance, Capital City Bank, The Cairo Messenger, South Georgia Outdoors, Southern Promotions and Apparel, Stash and the chamber.

Police department to host blood drive Thursday

The City of Cairo Police Department will be sponsoring a blood drive with the OneBlood Center Big Red Bus from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday. All donors will receive a free OneBlood T-shirt and a free wellness checkup including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, iron count and cholesterol screening. River of Words art exhibits opens at library

Through the end of the month, the library is hosting a traveling exhibit entitled River of Words. The exhibit will include art and poetry created by Georgia students between the ages of 5 and 19 and will be located in the south hall of the library. 

Colors Program

is Saturday

The Mission Ministry members of St. Stephen MB Church are holding their Colors Program at 5 p.m., Saturday. The public is invited to attend this special event, according to church officials.

Library offers free art classes

Roddenbery Memorial Library is offering free art classes for children in grades 1-5 on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. The classes are made possible with a donation from the Friends of the Library and will be taught by certified art teacher and Grady County local, Scott Eason. All supplies will be provided and the classes are free of charge. For more information, call the library at 377-3632.

Annual Friends of the Library meeting Tuesday

The annual Roddenbery Memorial Library Friends of the Library meeting will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, in the auditorium. Learn more about the Friends and you may decide to join this important library advocacy group. Everyone is welcome. 

Sports Hall of Fame accepting applications

Applications are now being accepting for the Grady County Sports Hall of Fame inductees who will join the ninth group to be inducted into the hall in March. To be eligible for recognition, inductees must be at least 40 years of age, a current or past participant in sports in Grady County, including athletes, coaches, referees, trainers, or citizens who have made exceptional contribution to sports in Grady County and have shown a positive role model to the community. Nominations forms are available at the Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce and Cairo High School.

Genealogy research

If you are interested in your family tree or just learning more about the history of the families in this area, you can learn more about Grady County and your family at the Roddenbery Memorial Library. Every Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Trustees Room, genealogy research assistance is offered for free to anyone who is interested in the subject.

WMS parents plan support night, chili cook-off

Washington Middle School’s Fourth Annual Parent Support Night and Chili Cook-Off is 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Jan. 26 at the WMS cafeteria. All WMS parents are encouraged to come and sample the chili and receive an orientation to the Georgia Milestones Test.
