Intersection could be named for late deputy

DALTON, Ga. — An intersection in northern Whitfield County could be named after a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office deputy who died from injuries sustained in the line of duty. Rep. Bruce Broadrick, R-Dalton, has introduced a resolution to dedicate the intersection of Highway 71 (Cleveland Highway) and Waring Road as the Deputy Durwin Potts Memorial Intersection. Potts died of injuries sustained in a traffic accident in 1996 when he was responding to a call for assistance from another deputy. “This honor is very well deserved, and I hope the resolution passes,” said Whitfield County Sheriff Scott Chitwood. Broadrick says there’s no question that Potts deserves the honor and he fully expects the measure will pass this year. “It will have to pass the transportation committees in both chambers and the House and the Senate, but I expect that will be just a formality,” he said.
