- Suwannee defeated Bradford 13-3 on Senior Night.
LIVE OAK — Thursday’s game went just how Suwannee hoped for on Senior Night.
Every senior contributed as Suwannee run-ruled Bradford 13-3 in five innings to finish the regular season with a 21-4 record.
A pair of four-year starters — Jackson Greene and Sam McMillan — ended the game as Greene lined a single to center field and McMillan dove headfirst into home to give Suwannee a walk-off win.
McMillan was happy to see all his teammates get involved on Senior Night.
“It doesn’t feel like I’ve been here four years,” McMillan said. “When people tell you it goes by fast, they aren’t lying.
“When everyone is playing well at the same time it makes it even more enjoyable because you see all your teammates have success and that makes you feel a sense of pride.”
Suwannee coach Justin Bruce thought the start of the game might be difficult on an emotional night, considering the many memories his eight seniors made playing baseball.
But his team did a good job of coming ready to play. SHS took a 4-0 lead after three innings and then scored seven runs in the the fourth.
“We’ve talked about making each at-bat like it’s a game-winning at bat,” Bruce said. “Sam had big hits in situations when it mattered. Mike (Gregory), coming off his injury and not missing a beat. The seniors did a good job.”
McMillan went 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs. Gregory, hitting leadoff, had two hits and two RBIs.
“It was sad. A little emotional,” Gregory said. “We’ve played for so many years together. We know this is the last time we’re going to be together and we want nothing more than to win it all.”
The SHS seniors celebrated were Greene, McMillan, Gregory, Braxton Furry, Evan Johnson, Kyle Gamble, Zach Law and Zane Stephens.
Furry pitched four shutout innings to pick up the win. He also had two hits and scored two runs.
Johnson, who is battling an injury, got a chance to pinch-hit and drove in a run with a single in the fourth inning.
“I loved how Evan was able to get in the game,” Gregory said. “Everyone did amazing being the last regular season game on this field.”
Gamble and Stephens both notched singles.
Suwannee faces Baker County on Tuesday in the first round of the District 3-5A playoffs at Bolles High School.
