MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — A man who had apparently sought refuge inside a parked car was found dead inside it Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
A press release from the Milledgeville Police Department identified the man as Melvin May, 59, of Gray in neighboring Jones County.
Police and Baldwin County Assistant Coroner Ken Garland, who responded to the scene, said the man died of natural causes. No foul play is suspected.
At roughly 3:40 p.m., someone walking along the 1100 block of South Jefferson Street notified the MPD of a man lying inside an apparently inoperable vehicle.
Upon arriving at the scene, officials got in touch with the owner of the property, who was also the owner of the vehicle, according to Detective Everett January of MPD. After learning that the homeowner was keeping the car on his property for repairs and had not been to the residence for more than a month, detectives received permission to search the vehicle and transport it to an impound lot.
While conducting a search of the man’s person, authorities found a receipt from the local Piggly Wiggly inside the man’s wallet, which was dated March 25.
Detectives travelled to Piggly Wiggly and looked through the store’s security footage from that day, where they observed a man in identical clothes to the ones worn by the victim.
After retrieving what they believed to be the victim’s name, detectives contacted his family and were able to positively identify the body.
