Terrell Gibbs ‘Tere’ Hurst

POWDER SPRINGS — Terrell Gibbs “Tere” Hurst, 64, of Powder Springs, died Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at Portsbridge Hospice in Austell.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Tift Memorial Gardens, with Dr. Fred Evers officiating.

Mr. Hurst was born Dec. 15, 1941, in Lakeland to the late Charles Jackson Hurst and Pauline Mary Gibbs Hurst Thrasher. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles William Hurst.

Mr. Hurst was reared in Tifton and attended the public schools in Tifton and graduated from Riverside Military Academy. He also attended Georgia Tech and graduated from Georgia State University with a degree in mathematics. He was a mechanical engineer and an innovator in the research and development of robotics. He enjoyed building and playing guitars. Mr. Hurst was a longtime resident of the Atlanta area and was of the Methodist faith.

Mr. Hurst is survived by his wife, Judith Abbott Hurst of Douglasville; two uncles, Donald Gibbs of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Randy Gibbs of Powder Springs; two aunts, Myra G. Wiggins of Tifton and Alice Whiddon of Sylvester; and one sister-in-law, Joy Hurst of Fayetteville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Fannie Nobles Baxter

TIFTON — Fannie Nobles Baxter, 92, of Tifton, died at Southern Care Personal Care Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006, at Pigott Branch Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pigott Branch Baptist Church.

The Long County native had lived in Ludowici all of her life, moving to Tifton three years ago. She was a member of Pigott Branch Baptist Church and a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton H. Baxter Sr.; a daughter, Dorothy A. Flowers of Orlando, Fla.; sons Clifton A. Baxter (Lennie) of Warner Robins and Carlton H. Baxter Jr. (Dee) of LaFayette; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Paula Gwendolyn Murray

ASHBURN — Paula Gwendolyn Murray, 51, of Ashburn, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at Tift Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ashburn First Baptist Church with burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Perry Funeral Chapel.

Ms. Murray was born in Tift County and was the daughter of the late William B. Murray Jr. and Annette Beard Murray of Ashburn. She was a graduate of Tift County High School, ABAC and the University of Georgia. She was a retired school teacher from the Tift county School system and was a member of the Ashburn First Baptist Church where she served in the Preschool Sunday School Department, Vacation Bible School and G.A.’s. Her hobbies were reading, writing and painting.

Survivors include her mother, Annette Beard Murray of Ashburn; two brothers, William A. Murray of Homerville and Brian D. Murray of Layton, Utah. Also surviving are six nieces and nephews, Ross Murray, Ben Murray and Trey Murray, all of Homerville, David Murray, Amanda Murray and Eddie Murray.

Robert F. Nicholson

NEW BROCKTON, Ala. — Robert F. Nicholson, 95, of New Brockton, Ala., died Thursday, May 18, 2006, in Flowers Hospital in Dothan, Ala.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church of New Brockton with the Rev. Henry Johnson and the Rev. Chad Hixson officiating. Burial will follow at the New Brockton City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Searcy Funeral Home in Enterprise, Ala. The body of Mr. Nicholson will be placed in the church one hour prior to the time of the service.

Mr. Nicholson was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Vela B. Nicholson, and numerous brothers and sisters.

Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Maylon and Viola Nicholson of Donalsonville, Charles and Twynette Nicholson of Mobile, Ala., Roy L. and Mary Nicholson of Arab, Ala., and John V. and Terri Nicholson of Donalsonville; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Larry K. Childers

TIFTON — Larry Kenneth Childers, 69, of Tifton, died Thursday, May 18, 2006, at Tift Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Assembly of God in Tifton with the Rev. Eddie Hutcheson, the Rev. O.L. Stokes and the Rev. Terrell Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors.

Mr. Childers’ sons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Fred Horne, Mike McBrayer, Dennis Marshall, Gary Vowell, Mike Delk, Dale Delk and retired UPS employees will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Born March 15, 1937, in Randolph County, Ala., to the late William Arthur “Doc” Childers and Sallie Morton Childers, Mr. Childers was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Childers and Curtis Childers.

Mr. Childers retired from UPS where he had worked as a diesel mechanic. He enjoyed restoring antique cars; he played, sang and wrote country and gospel music; he did woodworking and sold items at craft shows; and he loved his dogs. He was a member of the First Assembly of God, Tifton, and taught Sunday School and was a young group leader at his church.

Mr. Childers is survived by his wife, Marian Faye Warren Childers of Tifton; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Craig and Carla Childers of Ty Ty and Brad and Mona Childers of Hilton Head, S.C.; five grandchildren, Cailyn and Cole Childers and Cory Morris and Brad and Courtney Childers; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Richard Gurson Childers and Gail Childers of Douglas and June Childers; one sister-in-law, June Childers of Tupelo, Miss.; several nieces, nephews and cousins; one special niece, Kathy Stone of Tifton; and his dog and best friend, Chester.
