MOULTRIE — Violence erupted early Sunday morning outside a Moultrie nightclub, leaving one man dead in an apparent shootout in the parking lot.
Tony Harrison, 22, was struck by at least one bullet during the incident, Colquitt County Coroner Verlyn Brock said. Harrison apparently was taking cover behind a car at the time he was shot int he parking lot of Sunset Plaza on South Main Street.
The initial call to the county 911 center was made between 1:30 and 1:35 a.m.
Shell casings were found in the vicinity of Harrison’s body and in at least one other location in the parking lot, Brock said.
“It looked like it was (more than one) shooters, the way the cases were scattered,” Brock said. “There were some over yonder, some over here.”
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday at a Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime laboratory.
“I can’t tell how many times he was struck, but he had a fatal gunshot wound,” Brock said. “(There was) one about the right clavicle area.
Brock was not aware of any bystanders being struck, but added that his focus was on the fatality.
The GBI office in Thomasville is in charge of the investigation, he said.
Harrison is the second fatal shooting in the county this year, with both of those occurring in Moultrie.
The body of 36-year-old Terrell Eugene Hawkins was found on the night of Jan. 6 inside a 618 Third Ave. S.E. residence. He was shot multiple times and a second victim, Alexis Davis, 26, was shot and survived.
Ponikarski “P.K.” Green, 32, who was accused of shooting Hawkins in a 2006 incident, has been charged with murder in Hawkins’ slaying and aggravated assault in connection with the shooting of Davis. Green and another man were charged in the earlier incident in which Hawkins was shot and Eddie Sanchez Martin was fatally wounded at Shy Manor Apartments in Northwest Moultrie, but prosecutors dropped charges against them because the key witness was himself found slain a little more than a year later.
