A spectacular fireworks display, watermelon, and music from the Plath Family Band will highlight the annual Independence Day Celebration on July 3 at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village (GMA) at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
Gates will open for fireworks and evening activities at 6:30 p.m. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs to set up on the Opry Shelter Lawn to hear live music from the very talented Plath Family Band beginning at 7:30 p.m., followed by a veterans’ salute and the fireworks show. Admission to the concert and fireworks will be $10 per passenger car seating up to 8 people, and $20 per larger vehicle. This event is presented by ABAC and the GMA.
The Plath Family Band includes nine children ranging in age from 2-17 years of age.
Family members sing and play a variety of instruments including fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo, upright bass, and accordion. The band plays Southern gospel, bluegrass and old-time fiddle tunes.
The GMA’s youth apprentices and volunteers will have plenty of children’s activities on hand during the evening. Guests can also test their rock climbing skills on Rockin’ Roland’s Rock Climbing Wall.
Food will be available for purchase, including ice-cold watermelon, or visitors can bring their own snacks.
The Museum will also be open from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on July 3 as part of its “Sizzling Summer” hours during the month of July.
As a special treat the Vulcan Steam train will be running during the day. Admission during the day will be $10 per person, $5 for children, and $8 for seniors. The site will close at 3 p.m. that day and reopen at 6:30 p.m. for the evening event.
Veterans and current members of the United States armed forces will be admitted at no charge with the presentation of valid military service ID. Participants are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, and coolers. Alcohol and pets are not permitted.
The GMA will be closed on July 4 in observance of the national holiday. For information, guests can contact the GMA Country Store at (229) 391-5205 or email Polly Huff at phuff@abac.edu.
