THOMASVILLE- Thomas County Middle School recently held assemblies to celebrate the success of its annual Salvation Army canned food drive, collecting an impressive total of 4,138 cans. For the 40th consecutive year, the school earned the title of the highest donor in the region, continuing a cherished tradition that began decades ago.
Sgt. Robyn Hickey from the Salvation Army addressed the students, emphasizing the impact their contributions have on the community and the importance of maintaining this longstanding tradition. As part of the celebration, Hickey presented the school with a commemorative plaque recognizing its decades-long dedication to helping those in need.
The event also paid tribute to Earl Williams, former principal of Central Middle School, who initiated the annual Salvation Army canned food drive during his tenure in the 1970s. Williams made it his mission for the school to be the top donor every year. His family was honored at the ceremony and expressed pride in seeing his legacy live on.
To inspire participation, classrooms at each grade level competed to collect the most cans, with the winning classes enjoying a pizza party. Additionally, the highest individual donor was recognized with a special prize.
Thomas County Middle School’s commitment to giving back exemplifies the spirit of community and generosity instilled in its students—a tradition that continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of many.
