THOMASVILLE — A 77-year-old Thomasville woman, who had presided over local organizations, died late Sunday afternoon in a wreck at a city intersection.

Mary Jean Chalkley Alligood, former owner of Alligood Tire Service, died when the 1996 Oldsmobile Delta 88 she was driving traveled into the path of a 2003 Toyota Tacoma at the intersection of North Pine Tree Boulevard and Patterson Still Road.

The Toyota was driven by Sarah Lynn Westburg, 17, Cairo, who was treated and dismissed at Archbold Memorial Hospital.

Patricia Powers, 57, Thomasville, a front-seat passenger in the Alligood vehicle, was in stable condition at Archbold Monday afternoon.

The Oldsmobile was traveling west on Patterson Still about 5:25 p.m. Sunday, while the Tacoma was headed north on Pine Tree, according to a Thomasville Post 12 Georgia State Patrol (GSP) spokesman.

The Oldsmobile stopped at the intersection, then pulled into the Tacoma’s path, the spokesman said.

Both vehicles came to rest in the southbound lane of Pine Tree.

Alligood was a past president and treasurer of Thomasville Woman’s Club, a member of Briarcliff Garden Club and a past president of Countess Vandal Garden Club.

She served on the Second District board of the Georgia Federation of Women’s Club, chaired the group’s Community Improvement Program and was a charter member of the local Pilot Club.
