MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Two Milledgeville teens are dead and two others recovering from injuries they sustained in a single-car wreck Monday night on Roberson Mill Road.
Authorities say the driver of the car lost control and slammed into a signpost.
Baldwin County Coroner John Gonzalez identified the victims as Jonathan Antonio Williams, 18, and Christopher Jackson, 14.
Gonzalez said Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:15 p.m. Monday, and that Williams died at 1:54 a.m. Tuesday after being flown by helicopter from Oconee Regional Medical Center in Milledgeville to The Medical Center of Navicent Health in Macon.
The coroner said the case has been assigned to Chief Deputy Coroner Ken Garland.
Williams formerly attended Baldwin High School, but reportedly was in the process of getting a GED so he could apply for a job with the Georgia Department of Transportation. He worked as an independent newspaper carrier with The Union-Recorder.
Jackson, a seventh-grader at Oak Hill Middle School, was a front seat passenger in the 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by Williams, according to information from the Georgia State Patrol Public Affairs Office in Atlanta.
Two other teens were in the car at the time of the crash, which happened around 9:40 p.m. They sustained various injuries.
Grief counselors were brought in from local elementary schools to the middle school to offer help for students mourning the death of one of their fellow classmates, according to Byron Wellman, public relations coordinator with the Baldwin County School District.
“On behalf of the Baldwin County School District, I want to offer my most sincere thoughts and prayers to the families of those who lost their lives or were injured in the car wreck that occurred (Monday) night in Milledgeville,” said Dr. Noris Price, Baldwin County Schools superintendent. “It’s our wish that the families of those lost or injured find peace during this incredibly difficult time.”
A spokesperson with the state patrol identified the other wreck victims as Marquis Williams, 15, and Ramonnt Briscoe, 16, both of Milledgeville. Both of them were taken to The Medical Center of Navicent Health in Macon.
It was not immediately known whether or not Marquis Williams, who also attends the Oak Hill School, was any relation to Jonathan Williams, the 18-year-old driver.
Wellman said Briscoe was not a student of the local school district.
A GSP spokesperson said Jonathan Williams was driving the car southbound on state Route 29, which is also known as Roberson Mill Road, near the Milledgeville Mall.
Williams was negotiating a left curve at a high rate of speed, which caused him to lose control of the car, while changing lanes from the left to the right side of the roadway, the state patrol spokesperson said via email.
At that time, the car began rotating clockwise, and later struck a concrete curb before it slammed into a large signpost that holds up the BP price sign, the patrol spokesperson said.
The wreck remains under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol post in Milledgeville.
