OUR OPINION: Trump debates himself

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has proven to be quite a political contortionist in recent days. He’s taken multiple positions on one of America’s most divisive issues.

Trump’s torrent of twists started during an MSNBC town hall interview when he told Chris Matthews that abortion should be banned and a woman should be punished for having one. That comment managed to unite pro-choice and pro-life groups that never talk about punitive action against women.

Before his chat with Matthews aired in full, Trump started retreating from his unpopular stance. He said, “The issue is unclear” and the possibility for punishment should be left to individual states.

Realizing that his position switch didn’t satisfy people on either side of the issue, Trump took a third turn at it. He released a statement that said a woman who undergoes an abortion is “a victim” and only the doctor involved should be punished.

Trump continued to argue with himself hours later when he told John Dickerson of CBS that he supports existing abortion laws and they shouldn’t be changed. That position is 180 degrees from where Trump started.

Although he has a reputation for being strong and decisive, Trump has been extraordinarily weak and shifty in this matter. His shuffling has made him look more suited to be a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars” than the Oval Office.

Perhaps the next televised presidential debate should feature Trump vs. Trump.
