Biggest storyline after the NFL draft

The pendants of the NFL promised a chaotic draft and that is exactly what we got. After the Titans used the first overall pick to expectedly take Cam Ward it was pure and utter chaos. Between the Jaguars moving up to grab Travis Hunter, Cleveland’s solid draft and wild quarterback room, and the number two ranked quarterback falling to the fifth round, this draft has a whole lot to unpack and major implications for the upcoming season.
Starting with what happened first, Jacksonville surprisingly made a trade with the Browns to move up to the number two spot to draft Travis Hunter. This was reportedly a deal that was made 17 days prior to the draft and went into effect once the Titans selected Cam Ward. What was doubly surprising for fans and Travis Hunter himself is that the Jags had not spoken to Hunter since the NFL combine.
From a pure marketing perspective Hunter is a slam dunk in Jacksonville. He is well-known in thr South East having been born in Florida, going to high school in Georgia where he became a five-star recruit, becoming the first five-star to commit to an HBCU at Jackson State in Mississippi, and now, after a couple of years in Colorado, Hunter is returning to Florida to begin his NFL career.
The immediate question was how will the Jags play him. Hunter is an all-out two-way player. He played both receiver and corner for the Buffs, averaged 111.5 snaps per game, and was the best player in the country at both positions. That workload simply isn’t possible in the NFL so many were wondering how his new team would play him. Though many experts thought he would be primarily a corner with certain packages at receiver, the Jaguars chose the opposite. Reports indicate that Hunter will be used primarily as a receiver while also getting some plays in at corner.
The Biggest story of the draft was Hunter’s Colorado teammate Shedeur Sanders. Sanders, son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, fell to the fifth round despite being touted as the number two quarterback in the draft. Many believe he fell because no team was in love with his skill set and didn’t feel the distraction his last name would bring to a locker room was worth it.
He ultimately went to Cleveland, who had already drafter a QB in Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel. This leaves Cleveland with perhaps the most interesting quarterback room ever.
After the draft the Browns had a resurgent Joe Flacco, an unproven Kenny Pickett, and two highly skilled rookies all sitting behind the public disaster that has been Deshaun Watson. Multiple sources have reported that the Browns will not pick up Kenny Pickett’s fifth year option, meaning he is likely out for the starting bid. However, the other four quarterbacks will compete for the starting job.
What does this mean for the rookies? Well, it likely means that if Sanders and Gabriel can’t win the starting job, one of them may be cut. That would leave one of the best quarterbacks in college football last season without a team in his rookie season. One of them would likely get picked up as a free agent, but with all the hype surrounding this draft, it’s hard to imagine one of them not making the roster out of training camp.
The Browns did have an impressive draft otherwise. The gathered up some picks from the Jacksonville trade and picked up Michigan’s Mason Graham at number five, giving them a deadly defensive line with Graham and 2023 defensive player of the year Myles Garrett. They also picked up and pair of solid running backs in Ohio State’s Quinshon Judkins and Tennessee’s Dylan Sampson, which could help take the pressure off a potential rookie starting under center.
