- RUNNING TOWARD A STATE TITLE: The Varsity Track team had an outstanding showing at the region meet in April and looks to build on that success at the state competitions this week.
THOMASVILLE- Brookwood School’s Track and Field team ran an impressive Region Tournament on April 16th. The team, both boys and girls, placed as Region Runner-Up, with twenty of Brookwood’s athletes qualifying for the upcoming State Tournament.
Head Coach Mario Mathis boasted, “There have been struggles as each athlete learned to push themselves past comfort, but in the end, I think they are all proud of themselves. We have had many personal bests and achieved several region individual champions.”
These personal bests demonstrate the work that these athletes have put into themselves to grow into their sport.
Spring at Brookwood is notorious for its busy schedule, with athletes often competing in multiple sports: golf, tennis, soccer, baseball, and of course, track and field. Mathis continued, “Even though it has been tough, we have benefited from all of the athletes that play multiple sports because they are exposed to different movements that help their overall athletic development.”
The Multi-Sport Athlete has become an esteemed title that these athletes strive to achieve throughout their high school careers.
This year, Mathis set out with the principle of building a legacy of champions in Track and Field. With several personal records set, his strategy of developing every athlete has been proven to be quite successful. A few of these outstanding performances include:
- Abby Stalvey ‘25 – 100m, 200m, 4×100 – Region Champion/ also qualified for state in the 4x400m relay
- Pearson Taylor ‘25 – Finished 2nd in four events at the region meet
- Isabella Bass ‘28 – High Jump Region Champion and qualified for state in the 4x400m relay team
- Eliza Rosser ‘28 – Qualified for the state in the 200m dash and the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams and 4x100m Region Champion
- Olivia Mizell ‘29 – 4x100m Region Champion and qualified for state
- Lynleigh Moore ‘28 – Qualified for state in discus and finished 3rd in the region
- Matthew Lauderdale ‘25 – Boys High Jump Region Champion and qualified for state in the 4x800m relay
- Carriyona Williams ‘25 – Region Champion for the 4x100m relay team and qualified for state in both the relay team and 100m hurdles
- James Mizell ‘26 – Qualified for state in 100m dash and 4x100m
This summer Brookwood School will be installing a new rubber track that is intended to facilitate better training and provide a safer environment for the athletes. Mathis intends to implement more off-season development for the track athletes to better prepare them for next season.
In closing, Mathis referenced his connection to a Tim Tebow quote, “ ‘Somewhere he is out there, training when I am not. And one day, when we meet, he will beat me.’ That’s not going to be us.”
