CAIRO- The Jackie Robinson Boys and Girls Club was hosted by the Atlanta Braves last Saturday, as the team came from behind and defeated the Minnesota Twins, 6-4.
The annual event is part of Jackie Robinson Day, where students from the club are invited to a fun-filled day of activities in Atlanta. After being escorted out of Cairo by the Cairo Police Department, children in the club are transported on a 55-seat charter bus to the capital city.
They first arrive at The Battery in Truist Park, where they receive a private, exclusive tour of the incredible stadium and all access to the new “Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) Park,” before enjoying some pizza.
Several club members in attendance said the CHOA Park was one of their favorite experiences, as members of the Braves organization had organized activities for them there, including whiffle ball and hoola hoop contests. Kids could also opt to try their hand in the batting cage or at rock climbing.
Loyalty Bryant and La’Daysia Barron were both first timers on the trip and were excited to participate in the day’s action.
Bryant said she loved the rock climbing, while Barron enjoyed the mini games the Braves took part in, such as Simon Says and the hoola hoop contest.
Following their time at CHOA Park, the children were given on-field access with Braves players during the National Anthem. JRBGC Director Stephen Francis was even surprised, as the Braves allowed him to go on the field and give the fans an inspiring “Let’s Play Ball!” shout before the game started.
As the game continued, the kids, especially Barron enjoyed the games in between innings.
Home Depot had several characters, including a hammer, paintbrush, bucket, and a drill bit running across the field, all hoping to finish first as the other characters sabotaged them.
Other fun games included Frozone racing players.
Being a part of this experience was not lost on the JRBGC.
All of the children in attendance were hand-selected for their behavior throughout the year, as well as their representation of the JRBGC.
Bryant and Barron reminded their fellow club kids who have not yet attended to make sure they listen and follow the rules, so they can experience the fun as well.
“You play a lot of games, you get to meet the players and run, so just do good and listen,” they said.
Francis was happy to hear the kids’ reaction as he realizes what a special opportunity this is for the children of Cairo.
“It’s always such an honor and privilege to be given an opportunity to represent the JRBGC, our schools, and our Grady County community on such a big stage,” he said. “Jackie Robinson Day is such a special day to honor Jackie Robinson with MLB, in breaking the color barrier and opening doors that had been shut. Our children are so fortunate to be provided with amazing opportunities that will last them a lifetime.”
Francis especially thanked Danielle Bedasse, Vice President of Community Affairs and Executive Director of the Atlanta Braves Foundation for her continued show of love, appreciation, and support of the JRBGC.
“We do not take these opportunities lightly,” Francis said.
He also thanked the Daniel Mumphery- Community and Henry Louis Aaron Fund, along with the staff, and JRBGC Board of Directors, MNW Corporate Board and CEO Brian Flemming who helped make the mission possible.
