Central track and field excels at region

THOMASVILLE – Thomas County Central’s track and field team delivered a memorable day at the office with its performance last week at the Region 2-5A Track and Field Championships in Albany, Georgia.

The Lady Yellow Jackets were most impressive, winning the region championship with a sensational 156 total points.

Speedster Zykierra Hightower staked her claim as one of the fastest athletes in the state, winning first place in the 100 meters and 400 meters. She was also part of the 4×100-meter relay team, along with Qua’Mya Yearby, Jaida Pinkins and D’Laesha Spencer, that also finished first. Hightower also placed second in the 200 meters and will compete in all events at the state sectionals.

Hunter Smith finished first in the shot put and discus, while Elizabeth Parker claimed the region championship in the pole vault. Kennedy Warren won first in the discus.

Spencer, another Central speedster, placed third in the 100 meters and long jump and fourth in the 200 meters.

A’riyah Hall was outstanding on the track and in the field, finishing second in the high jump and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles. The girls 4×200-meter relay team of Yearby, Wynter Sessions, Abreya Lee and Pinkins placed second, while the girls 4×400 meter relay team of Sessions, Emma Grace Vealey and Cadence Curnalia finished third. Sessions also placed fourth in the 400 meters.

Ziara McCoy placed third in the pole vault, while Lee placed third in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump.

On the boys side, Kamyias Jackson placed second in the high jump, while Wayne Thompson finished third in the 100 meters. Earl Brooks finished third in the triple jump, while Owen May placed third in the 400 meters. The boys 4×800-meter relay team of May, Jackson, Johnny Bradshaw and Caleb Baggett finished fourth.

All will compete at the state sectionals.
