CAIRO – Cairo’s track and field teams ended their regular season with a meet at Worth County last Tuesday. The Syrupmakers’ postseason begins this week on Tuesday, April 22 and Thursday, April 24 in the Region 1-3A meet at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.

Cairo coach Daniel Coleman likes the progression of his boys and girls this year in preparing for the postseason.

“They love to compete. They’re excited about being able to compete against their region opponents. They’re all real excited about it, ready to run and ready to get after it,” Coleman said. “We’ve seen a lot of progress from day one until now. I think it’s on an upward trend with the progress that we’ve made.”

The preliminary running events will be held on April 22, and then the finals for all running events and field events will be held on April 24.

“It’s always very competitive; Albany schools, Bainbridge, Peach, and us. Everybody’s got athletes, they can run, jump and usually have some real strong guys and girls that can sling that shotput and discus. It’s all very competitive with that group,” Coleman said.

Cairo’s final preparation came at the Worth County Senior Night on April 15. It competed against other teams like Berrien, Calhoun County, Irwin County, Macon County, Randolph-Clay, Terrell County, Thomasville, Ware County and Worth County.

Cairo’s Eliza Bell was the girls’ lone first-place finisher, winning the 1,600 meters. Davion Tarver was the boys’ lone first-place finisher, winning the 400 meters with a new personal record time of 51.51.

Nyla McGee finished second place in the 400 meters with a personal record time 1:05.66. Kendra Sims placed second in the 300-meter hurdles. Cairo’s 4×400-meter relay team of Sims, Ariyah Felder, McGee, and Jh’mya Pope placed second.
