THOMASVILLE – Thomas County Central’s boys and girls golf teams have experienced up-and-down seasons. Just a couple of weeks away from the area tournament, the Yellow Jackets look to build consistency with their next tournament, scheduled for Monday, April 14 at Coffee.

“It’s been up and down a little bit. We’ve had two pretty good tournaments and others that were disappointing or not up to the level I thought we could do on the boys side,” Central golf coach Kevin Esch said. “On the girls side, we’re still growing the program. There’s not a lot of golf experience. Our most experienced golfer is probably a freshman. They’ve got a lot of experience this year which will help them, moving forward into next year. They’ve all played multiple tournaments and played every match.”

Central’s boys leader this year has been junior Wyatt Elkins. He has been the only Yellow Jacket golfer to shoot in the 80s in every tournament.

“He’s been the most consistent player. We’ve had a couple of other guys that have thrown in a 79 each which is great to see. I just wished we had more consistency across the board,” Esch said.

Though a freshman, Mae Harrison has provided Central’s girls team the most experience.

“She’s probably the most experienced one, playing tournaments on her own outside of what we do. She’s played in junior tournaments for two or three years now. She’s probably been the most consistent one that we’ve got on the girls side so far,” Esch said.

Central will compete in the Area tournament, which combines two regions, at Southern Hills Country Club in Hawkinsville. The boys tournament will be held on April 22, and the girls tournament will be held on April 23.
