CAIRO – The Cairo Syrupmakers are no longer in first place in Region 1-3A. But they can clinch the region’s No. 2 spot against Bainbridge next week.

Peach County defeated Cairo twice last week, including a 9-2 decision last Friday in Cairo, to clinch the region title. The losses were the Syrupmakers’ first defeats in region play and dropped Cairo (6-2) into second place, a game ahead of Bainbridge (5-3) and Dougherty (5-3).

One win in two games against Bainbridge next week will clinch second place in the region for the Syrupmakers.

Cairo will need to get its offense in gear if it is to make a late-season surge heading into the playoffs. The Syrupmakers lost three straight heading into Wednesday’s home game against Valdosta. It included a 13-2 loss at Tift County on Tuesday.

Cairo was held to six hits in its first loss to Peach County, led by Cannon Maige’s two hits. The Syrupmakers were also held to just three hits in Friday’s loss to the Trojans, with Maige recording two of them, including a solo home run in the first inning.

Cairo will host Bainbridge on Tuesday, April 8, and play at Bainbridge on Friday, April 11.
