CAIRO- The Cairo High School Theatre Department, known as The Stage Makers, was recently recognized by the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards with the Standing Ovation Award for their production of Mamma Mia!. The program was one of only seven schools in the state to receive this distinction.

The Standing Ovation Award highlights schools that implement outstanding and innovative efforts to create inclusive and welcoming spaces for all students. The Stage Makers were recognized for their work in transforming a storage room into a sensory-inclusive space, providing students and audience members of all abilities with an opportunity to participate in and enjoy live theatre in a comfortable environment.

The Cairo High School Auditorium’s sensory room, located in the lobby, played a key role in this recognition. Designed to accommodate individuals who may experience sensory overload, the space offers a quiet area where they can take breaks while still having access to the performance. This initiative was noted by the adjudication panel as a meaningful step toward making theatre more accessible.

The sensory room was created in 2023 after the theatre director, Austin Harrell, wrote a grant to purchase sensory items. With the assistance of the Special Education Department at Cairo High School, items were carefully selected and placed in the room. The space includes a trampoline, a swing, yoga balls, weighted blankets, bean bag chairs, noise-canceling headphones, and a white noise machine, among other sensory-friendly resources. These additions ensure that individuals who need sensory accommodations have the tools to feel comfortable while enjoying live theatre or other arts events.

Harrell commented on the program’s approach to inclusivity. “Theatre is for everyone. We want every student and every member of our community to feel welcome, whether they are on stage, backstage, or in the audience. Receiving the Standing Ovation Award confirms that we are making a difference, not only in our local community, but in the state of Georgia, and we are incredibly honored.”

In addition to their efforts in accessibility, Mamma Mia! was adjudicated for the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards, marking another milestone for the program. The production featured detailed choreography, engaging performances, and strong participation from students. The Stage Makers are also the first school in Southwest Georgia to participate in the GHSMTA program.

They are excited to receive their adjudication feedback, which will help them continue to grow the program and reach new heights in their future seasons.
