THOMASVILLE – The Thomasville Bulldogs picked up a big region win on Tuesday over Fitzgerald, 2-1.
It was a hard fought and long game that went into extra innings. Preston Deutsch got the start for Thomsville and had a good showing. He went four innings, allowing four hits, but holding the Purple Hurricane to just a single run.
Ben McDougald showed up in relief recording a pair of strikeouts and allowing two hits in two innings. Jay Harrison finished the game with three innings of work. He secured two K’s and allowed five hits, but the Thomasville defense held firm, not allowing another run.
The scoring started in the top of the second with a Jay Harrison single. Kiff Parrish stepped up two batters later and sent a line drive single to left, putting Harrison on third. Parrish would steal second as Jamisen Byram was at the plate. Byram grounded out for out number two of the inning, but Jay Harrison touched home and put Thomasville up 1-0.
Not much action took place in the next couple of innings with several three up three down innings.
However, in the bottom of the fourth, a pair of hits gave Fitzgerald life. A sac fly scored a run and, despite an impressive double play from Byram and shortstop JC Wise, the game was tied 1-1.
The game would drag into a stalemate for five more innings with neither team willing to give an inch. That is, until the top of the ninth inning, when Parrish sent a line drive screaming to center for a double. With a runner in scorng position, Byram, who seemed to be involved in every big moment in this game, stepped up to the play. On the fourth pitch of the at-bat Byram singled on a hard hit ground ball up the middle and Parrish came home to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
Despite a single by Fitzgerald, Thomasville would get the three outs they needed to secure the hard-fought victory.
This win is big for Thomasville and gives them their second region win of the season. Fitzgerald is one of the best teams in the region, sitting in second place behind Jeff Davis with a 7-3 record. It brings the Bulldogs to 6-13 overall and 2-5 in the region. Thomasville is currently sixth in the region standings.
