THOMASVILLE- John B. Gordon 383 UDC enjoyed celebrating Georgia Day which is February 12. Mary Margaret Quiggle presented interesting information about Georgia to the members at the February meeting. She displayed handouts that were about Georgia. This included such facts as, “Georgia was named after King George II, who approved the colony’s charter in 1732. In 1733, Georgia was established as the 13th colony, and in 1788 it became the fourth U.S. state. Georgia was well represented at the Second Continental Congress (1775-1781) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with three Georgians-Button Gwinnett, Lyman Hall, and George Walton.”
Quiggle made a poster board display called, “Celebrating Georgia Day, February 12.” She also gave everyone a small Georgia flag to take home. There is a beautiful, large display at the Roddenbery Memorial Library about the state of Georgia which Quiggle provided for all to see. Susan Futch, Georgia Day Chairman for the chapter, will be placing a poster board display about Georgia in a school. President Sheila Tucker said, “Our chapter gave books to elementary schools about Georgia. These books are on reading levels that students can read and learn information about our wonderful state of Georgia. The books can also be used by teachers as resources to share with their students.”
