THOMASVILLE- The Thomasville Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in collaboration with the Thomasville Garden Club, Inc. will hold Thomasville’s Annual Arbor Day Celebration on February 21, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at the Thomasville Garden Center located at 1102 S. Broad Street. The event will be presented in conjunction with the City of Thomasville, Live Oak Society, Thomasville Landmarks and the Georgia Forestry Commission.
The celebration will feature the planting of two trees at the Garden Center. One proclaiming Arbor Day and designating Thomasville a “Tree City USA” and the Thomasville Chapter DAR will plant a Liberty Tree in honor of the 250th Anniversary of the United States, American Independence 1776-2026 and the Revolutionary War Patriots from Thomas County.
A reception will be held afterward. The public is invited to attend.
Arbor Day was first celebrated in Nebraska City, Nebraska in 1872. Julius Sterling Morton and his wife Caroline, pioneers from Detroit, Michigan and lovers of nature, quickly planted trees and shrubs around their home. He became publisher of the newspaper in Nebraska City and spread his enthusiasm for trees. The pioneers missed all of the trees back East and all that they provided, so a proclamation was issued to set aside one day to plant trees. Arbor Day is now celebrated in every state throughout the country from January to May depending on when it is the best time to plant trees in that state.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. With more than 190,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide, DAR is one of the world’s largest and most active service organizations. More than one million women have joined the DAR since it was founded. To learn more about today’s DAR, visit www.DAR.org.
