OCILLA – Thomas County Central’s soccer teams scored a doubleheader sweep in their season openers against Irwin County on Thursday. The Lady Yellow Jackets won 8-2, while Central’s boys prevailed 10-0.

Kate Thedford paced Central’s girls with three goals, while Selena Gonzalez, Paige Parkerson, Lexi Frysz, Addie Vickers, and Mollie Flores each added a goal.

Central coach Tony Voyles liked the win but knows there is still plenty of work left before the start of region play.

“The girls struggled to find a rhythm in the first half but figured it out after that,” Voyles said. “We have only had six practices so far, so this game will show us where we need to improve and what we can work on over the next few weeks as we build toward our region games.”

Central’s boys were led by Lee Duvergel’s three goals. Maddox Drake scored two, while Nate Seago, Dakari Meades, Landon Reed, Drew Jones, and Caden Williams each added a goal.

“The boys played well against an outmatched opponent. We were able to get some young new players on the field and get them some varsity experience,” Voyles said. “They passed the ball well and scored plenty of goals. We have a tough matchup against Colquitt County next Friday, so hopefully this gave us some confidence.”
