THOMASVILLE- Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC) recently awarded a $500 sponsorship to Thomas County Central High School’s Cyberstingers robotics teams to support their participation in the 2025 FIRST Tech Challenge competition. SRTC mentors, Education Outreach Coordinator Candace Christian and Director of Innovation Willie Allen, presented the award during a visit to the robotics lab.
The Cyberstingers have had an outstanding season, with all three teams placing in the top seven out of 26 teams in the South Region League, which includes Macon, Columbus, and South Georgia. Cyberstingers Gold Team 6988 is currently in 2nd place, narrowly missing 1st due to a tiebreaker. Cyberstingers Blue Team 5979 is in 3rd place, and Cyberstingers Green Team 8433 is holding 7th place.
Coach Bellamy stated, “This has been a great season. Our community has increased its support, and all three teams have performed well.”
This year’s FIRST Tech Challenge game, Into the Deep, features an underwater-themed arena. Teams design and operate robots to complete tasks using both autonomous and driver-controlled strategies. Points are earned by collecting and placing game pieces and lifting the robots. The game emphasizes teamwork, as alliances of two teams work together to achieve higher scores in matches.
Throughout the 2025 season, the Cyberstingers have been actively involved in outreach, including fundraising, visiting local technology sites, connecting with mentors and engineering students, performing community service, and sharing their robotics program with the community. SRTC mentors Christian and Allen have visited several times to provide guidance, share insights, and support the teams’ efforts.
During the recent visit, the students had the opportunity to showcase their robots and demonstrate their skills on the game field. The sponsorship funds will be used to improve robot designs and support travel expenses for the district tournament.
Thomas County Central High School appreciates SRTC’s continued support, which helps inspire students to excel in robotics, engineering, and technology.
