THOMASVILLE – It had been a while since Thomasville’s Harris English’s last victory on the PGA Tour; 1,308 days in fact. So, when he sank a par putt on the 18th hole of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines on Saturday, he was understandably emotional.
“It’s always a journey,” said English during an interview with CBS following his round of 73 that saw him prevail with a one-shot victory. “I’ve been doing this for 14 years, and it never gets easier.”
But this latest journey got sweeter for English, especially since it was his first victory as a father, holding his 1-year-old daughter Emilia Elizabeth while giving the CBS interview.
English was already a multi-championship winner on the PGA Tour before last weekend, but he hadn’t hoisted a trophy since winning the Travelers Championships in 2021.
This latest victory gives English five victories on the Tour. He’s also won the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions, the 2013 OHL Classic at Mayakoba, and the 2013 FedEx St. Jude Classic.
English played consistent on Saturday, a day highlighted by extremely difficult playing conditions. He finished the round with 12 straight pars en route to a 1-over 73. He tallied a 68 in round one, 73 in round two, and 66 in round three. English won the tournament by one stroke over Sam Stevens.
