THOMASVILLE- After decades in its iconic location on 106 South Street, the Thomasville Times-Enterprise has moved to 218 W. Jackson Street #A.
Established as the Thomasville Times by Civil War veteran John Triplett and partner John R. Christian as a Democratic weekly newspaper in 1873, the paper has undergone numerous leadership and ownership changes.
After a year of publication, Triplett bought out Christian’s share and ran the Times under his sole ownership.
The popularity of the publication led to its expansion of a daily edition in 1888. The following year, Triplett purchased the competing Southern Enterprise and combined the two papers under the Daily Times- Enterprise title. He remained the editor of the paper for thirty years, before selling the publication in 1903. In 1907, E. R. Jerger took over ownership and continued his involvement with the paper until he died in 1960.
Lee E. Kelly, Sr., who began work with the Times-Enterprise as a paperboy, took over controlling ownership in the 1950s and eventually passed ownership on to his sons.
During that time, the paper was booming with a fully functioning press, insert machine, and large newsroom.
When the paper was eventually sold to Community News Holdings Inc., the press was shut down and all publications were printed at the Valdosta Printing Facility, reducing the need for such a large space.
As readers began to change the way they consumed media, the newsroom staff was also reduced, giving way to more additional space.
Under its new ownership, the Times-Enterprise made the decision to move into a more reasonably sized location for its current operating needs and staff.
While the move is an exciting time for the paper, it understandably housed many memories and special moments for its employees.
With a smaller location, employees still understood the need to preserve history and have donated all historic materials and bound volumes to the Thomasville History Center, where readers can still find valuable information from publications past and present.
“We look forward to a new chapter in our office’s history and we hope to continue serving our community and readers at our new location,” said Editor Jill Holloway.
The new location will be open for regular business hours, beginning Friday, January 17, 2025, from 8 a.m.- noon and 1- 5 p.m.
