Williams publishes teen self-help book

THOMASVILLE- Local real estate agent and part-time substitute Janese Williams has dedicated her life to raising her three boys. However, it wasn’t always easy. As a young mother, Williams often found herself trying to balance multiple things and looking for a purpose. She soon saw her children seeking the same things, leading her to publish an inspirational book for pre-teens and teens: Zara & Zane The Power of Focus and Intentionality.
Williams had her first son at 15-years-old, and dove straight into motherhood, while still growing up herself.
As her son entered high school, Williams began to substitute teach and quickly learned students were still facing the same struggles she was at 15 and lacked the guidance she yearned for.
“I began every one of my classes by asking the students what they wanted to do after they graduated instead of calling role,” Williams explained. “What I learned is, so many kids didn’t have a clue and I saw myself in them in so many ways.”
Williams decided it was time to take action.
“I didn’t want to sit back anymore, I wanted to be a part of the solution and help these kids,” she said.
In order to be part of the solution, Williams began writing a book that is self-paced and helps kids set goals, know their potential, and gain confidence in their abilities.
“I just wanted to encourage them and give them the tools on how to do better,” she said.
Williams’ son recently graduated with honors and now attends the University of Georgia for Engineering.
However, without the proper guidance, Williams said she knows he wouldn’t succeed, and fears for some kids it may be too late.
As a parent, she said she always wants to check in but knows once a child gets to college, they are grown, and it’s up to them to want to do better for themselves and their future. But, she believes if they’ve never been taught to have goals and look beyond what’s right in front of them, they will never grow.
Williams questioned herself on how she could help kids learn to set goals through just words on a page. It was then she made her chapter book, a workbook, where each chapter had a challenge, along with an affirmation.
“Within each chapter there are activities,” she explained. “There are goal-setting activities, focus trackers, and affirmations, along with positive quotes. Every chapter follows that format and helps build character, problem-solve, and relationship build.”
The book is geared toward students in sixth through twelfth grade, with a special emphasis on students preparing for the next chapter in their lives.
According to Williams’ research, there is no other book on the market for this age range, containing the needed materials to succeed.
“There are other books that have goal-setting and stuff like that, but mine has QR codes to playlists of motivational music and allows you to create your own playlist to motivate yourself,” she said.
Williams said the book also directs them to her social media, where she posts affirmations and links to helpful resources daily.
“The book is almost like a living will,” she said. “It’s changing constantly and being added to.”
Younger siblings who see their older brother and sister working in the book and want to follow in their footsteps will soon have an outlet, as well. Williams said the first book is geared toward high school students, but it is set to become a series.
“My next book is for elementary school,” she said. “It will be more of a picture book, but it will still be on focus and how to have a positive mindset. It will grow with you as you grow.”
For those ready to grow with Zane and Zara, the book can be purchased on Amazon or through Williams, as she has ordered a batch of copies.
Additionally, Williams has spoken with staff at Thomasville High School and hopes to soon have it available in the school library.
