THOMASVILLE – Thomas County Central’s flag football team exceeded expectations in its inaugural season.
It won eight games, advanced to the playoffs and recorded the first playoff victory in school history.
Its biggest accomplishment, though, may be generating support and excitement among the school and community for the growing sport.
“I love what we have but I also know we have some really good athletes that didn’t come out for a lot of reasons. It’s another commitment, and it’s something new, and they weren’t quite sure about it,” Central coach Chad Parkerson said. “I really like what we have, but I know there’s some girls walking the halls and some really athletic girls that I think would absolutely enjoy it.”
Central featured 27 players on this year’s inaugural roster, including four seniors. Parkerson utilized a lot of players on offense and defense which should make the Lady Yellow Jackets a threat at next year’s region championship.
The enthusiasm is not limited to the players on the team and girls at the school. Administration and school leaders have shown nothing but support for the program.
“We have had tremendous support as far as just people being present and being positive; financial contributions to support the girls,” Parkerson said. “You can’t go to Pope early in the season and spend hotel money, meal money and all of that stuff for free. There’s a financial part of it that allows to be able to let the girls experience these things. The amount of support we have is elite.”
Central will have a team banquet in the spring, followed by tryouts next spring.
