THOMASVILLE- Thomas County Schools Board of Education recognized outgoing board member Mark NeSmith on Tuesday night, following more than a decade of dedication to the school system.
NeSmith has been a member of the Board of Education since 2009. While serving the BOE, he was elected vice-chair in 2015 and 2021, and named chair in 2016 and 2022. When not working to better the school system, NeSmith manages Rodina Plantation in Boston and is a self-employed farmer.
“Mark has served many years as a faithful, dedicated board member for the Thomas County School System and tonight the Board and I would like to award him with a certificate of appreciation and a personalized clock for his years of service to our system,” said Superintendent Dr. Lisa Williams.
According to Williams, NeSmith has served for 16 years on the Board of Education for the Thomas County School System.
As NeSmith walked up to accept his parting gift, he shared a few words of gratitude and thanks, especially to his wife.
“Thank you for the honor,” NeSmith said. “On the car ride here, I had Allison, my wife, figure up something.”
NeSmith explained he enjoyed television commercials that figured up how long they had been doing something together as a company. So, between his wife’s time in the school system as a teacher, his children’s time in school, and his service on the board, the family had contributed 95 years to the Thomas County School System.
“It’s been a privilege to serve what little bit of time I was here and do what little bit I could,” he said.
NeSmith shared his dad was a man of few words, but he always taught his children to know when it was their time to leave.
“Now, it’s time for me to leave, but I really appreciate the opportunity to serve,” NeSmith said. “It has served our family more than I can ever serve it.”
Williams announced December 31, 2024, will be NeSmith’s last day as a Thomas County Schools BOE member, but he will forever be a Yellow Jacket.
NeSmith will be replaced by Mitchell Herring, who won the Municipal/General election. He, along with other Board members who were re-elected or ran unopposed will be sworn in during their January meeting.
