THOMASVILLE- The City of Thomasville has partnered with Theatre Projects, a globally recognized venue planning consultant, to conduct a comprehensive market and feasibility study on the future renovation and use of the Thomasville Municipal Building and Auditorium. This initiative aims to explore the potential for transforming the historic venue into a premier performing arts and entertainment center that meets modern demands.

Theatre Projects brings decades of expertise in strategic planning, facility management, artistic programming, and community engagement. Their team has successfully guided arts organizations, municipal governments, and event venues worldwide, aligning operational needs with long-term success.

“This study represents an exciting opportunity for Thomasville to build on its reputation as a vibrant cultural destination,” said Mary Patchunka-Smith, City of Thomasville’s Event Venue and Facilities Manager “We are eager to explore how the Municipal Auditorium can serve as a cornerstone for arts, entertainment, and tourism in South Georgia.”

Over the next six months, Theatre Projects will work closely with the City and a 15-member steering committee to address critical questions, including:

  • What is the current and future demand for cultural and entertainment events in Thomasville and the surrounding region?
  • How can an updated venue boost local tourism and enhance visitor experiences?
  • What operational and management models will ensure long-term success?
  • What design features and amenities are necessary to support diverse programming, including live performances, conferences, and community events?

The process will include multiple opportunities for community members and stakeholders to engage in elements such as town hall meetings, focus groups, and surveys. The public is encouraged to attend one of two town hall meetings on Thursday, December 5, 2024, to share their insights and perspectives on the project:

Afternoon Session: 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Covey Nest

Evening Session: 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Covey Nest

Additionally, the City is seeking public input on the future of arts and entertainment in the community. To gather feedback on the operations and profitability of the Municipal Auditorium, a survey will be available from Friday, November 29, to Friday, January 10. Those interested can find the survey at thomasvillega.com/auditorium, on the official City of Thomasville social media channels, and it will also be included in the upcoming edition of the City’s Plugged In newsletter.

“The City is committed to fostering collaboration and transparency throughout this process,” said Patchunka-Smith. “Community input will be vital in shaping a vision for the Auditorium that reflects the unique character and aspirations of Thomasville.”
