Radar signs help slow traffic in Meigs

MEIGS- The city of Meigs has installed two new speed radar signs in hopes of slowing speeding, following a fatal accident.

City Manager Rhonda Brown recently approached the City Council about the speed radar signs, suggesting they use their SPLOST (Specialized Local Option Sales Tax) to purchase the signs in high-traffic areas.

“We get a lot of traffic coming from Ochlocknee, and I notice firsthand the number of people speeding through our town,” Brown said. “I received several complaints from citizens and after the fatal accident on Ga. 3, I felt like something needed to be done.”

The two signs are mobile and are currently placed on Ga. 3 and Church Street, coming into Meigs from Ochlocknee.

If the Council sees other areas becoming frequent sites for speeding, it can move the posted signs where it sees fit.

The signs flash when individuals drive above the posted 35 MPH limit and are capable of printing out reports and recording high speeds.

Although the signs have only been posted briefly, Brown said the public is already seeing a difference.

“The public is very happy that Meigs is finally having these conversations and utilizing their funds to protect the community,” Brown said.

Brown also shared her appreciation, noting she has noticed individuals slowing down when they see the flashing lights on her drive in from Pelham.

“I really appreciate the Council for allocating the funds for speed radar signs and for keeping the safety of our citizens on the forefront,” she concluded.
