THOMASVILLE – In an extraordinary show of dedication, skill and teamwork, Thomas County Central Army JROTC Raider teams celebrated a major victory at the Area 2 region competition held in October at Crisp County High School.
The Male Team captured their fourth straight Region Championship, while the Mixed Team made program history by securing their first back-to-back Region Championship. This milestone inspired a surge of interest and pride among the cadets and supporters, raising the program’s overall profile.
The Male Team’s championship streak is a testament to rigorous training, discipline, and commitment to excellence. Each victory has bolstered the team’s reputation and demonstrated the depth of skill within the JROTC Program, establishing them as a formidable force in upcoming competitions.
Team captain, Cadet Major Aidan Poppell explained it was challenging to help train the new cadets who have never experienced being a Raider.
“As a commander you must be patient with them and explain everything in high detail,” Poppell said. “However, the new cadets have to put in the effort and care about the task in order for the training to work and be effective. Providing motivation behind each task is the essence of the training.”
Meanwhile, the Mixed Team’s back-to-back win reflects the program’s focus on inclusivity and collaboration. The team skillfully balanced a range of talents, executing each event with coordination and teamwork. This victory highlights the team’s emphasis on adaptability and leadership.
Mixed Team captain, Cadet Captain Maddax Hutchinson credited their success to the unity and trust within the group.
“Our team set out to become back-to-back region champs in the mixed category, trying to follow up last year’s winning team,” Hutchinson said. “This was a rebuilding year for us, so we were still figuring things out. Despite this, we were able to come together as a team and compete at our best. It was only because of each other that we were able to come out on top.”
The teams competed in a series of challenging events, including the Team Run, 1-Rope Bridge, Cross Country Rescue, Raider Fitness Challenge, Raider Fitness Test, and the Tire Flip, which tested their physical endurance, mental focus, and teamwork skills.
Raider coach and Army JROTC instructor, Lieutenant Colonel Kevin D. Ingram, credited the teams’ success to a focus on building connections.
“With so many key players lost to graduation, we had to build from the ground up this year,” Ingram explained. “We focused on connection – a way to build the bond necessary to compete at the level to win again. I am proud of how they came together, trusting each other to accomplish this year’s goal.”
The achievements of both teams reflect a point of pride for the JROTC program, underscoring its commitment to developing capable, motivated future leaders for the school and the community.
