THOMASVILLE- Students from Thomas County Middle School’s MERIT program recently enjoyed an unforgettable experience at Florida State University’s Women’s Basketball annual Education Day. Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders witnessed history as the Seminoles set a new single-game scoring record, securing a commanding victory with 119 points to their opponent’s 49.

Students arrived at the game early to take part in the pre-game festivities. They watched performances from the FSU band, the dance team, and the cheer squad. These exciting presentations helped set the stage for the action-packed game that followed.

In addition to the thrilling game, each student received an activity book filled with puzzles, games, and insightful information about the FSU Women’s Basketball team. Back in the classroom, these activity books will be used to discuss teamwork, perseverance, and goal setting as part of the student’s school day.

The record-breaking statistics from this high-scoring game will play a role in math classes across sixth, seventh, and eighth grades in the coming week. Math lessons will incorporate the record-breaking scores, with students exploring concepts such as averages, percentages, and probability. Eighth-grade math classes, in particular, will analyze shooting data to create a line of best fit. Students will calculate slopes, apply the point-slope formula, and write linear equations to predict scoring outcomes based on shot attempts.

The FSU Education Day event was more than just an exciting field trip; it seamlessly blended academics with hands-on experiences, showing students the connection between sports and learning. Teachers and students alike left the game with great memories and valuable lessons, eager for future opportunities where education comes to life beyond the classroom walls.
