THOMASVILLE – The Brookwood Warriors will have a new football chief for next season. Brookwood football coach Shane Boggs confirmed to the Times-Enterprise that he resigned following his team’s final regular season game more than a week ago.
This year’s 0-9 season concluded Boggs’ time as head coach which dates back more than 20 years over two different stints. Boggs led the Warriors to four region championships and their last state championship in 2007.
“It got to the point where I really believed Brookwood’s football team would be better off with new leadership. I also believe it’s time for me to get a fresh start and let both Brookwood and the Boggs family build a little positive momentum,” said Boggs, who stressed it was his decision to leave Brookwood. “I actually had a conversation with Dr. (Randy) Watts a while back, telling him these were my intentions. It became official on that Monday.”
Boggs’ last season was his most frustrating as head coach with the Warriors. Brookwood fielded 25 players on this year’s roster; a low number for a team competing against Tiftarea and Valwood in the GIAA Class 3-A. It led to a winless season. However, the season did not factor in Boggs’ decision to leave.
“I just think, among other things, the 30-year football coach at any given school, I just don’t think you’re going to see that quite as much,” Boggs said. “Obviously, the season was tough for everybody. I’m not going to pin it on the season. The truth is our players were a joy to coach. I don’t think anybody would say it’s a joy to go winless, but they were really fun to coach.”
“The thing that just became clear to me, the Brookwood football team would be better off without me at this point, and I needed to go look for a new challenge and a fresh start.”
Boggs coached Brookwood from 2003-2008 and from 2013-2024. He was also a head coach in Florida and Tennessee. Boggs also admits that this is not his final coaching stint. He plans to continue coaching somewhere.
“I have every intention of continuing to coach. Where? I don’t know,” Boggs said. “It’s about to be that season where things come open. I certainly think it would be in the Southeast.”
