Is Bill Belichick a bad hire?

In the last month, the NFL has seen a pair of head coaches fired. The most high-profile canning came in early October when the New York Jets shocked everyone by firing head coach Robert Saleh. Many felt that Saleh’s firing was premature and an attempt by a failing organization to inject some life into their team. That didn’t exactly work as the Jets have lost three of their last four. That offense may get better quickly with the addition of Davante Adams.

Most recently, the New Orleans Saints fired head coach Dennis Allen. The only surprise here was the timing. It’s always a bit surprising when a team fires their head coach mid-season. But Allen was never going to last as the Saints signal caller. He finished with an 18-25 record in New Orleans. Allen took over in 2022 after Sean Payton resigned and in his three years, Allen did not have a winning season, couldn’t win a division that featured the worst teams in the NFL and a lack of competition, and did not make the playoffs.

So, the question for these two teams is who will be the next head coach. Of course, one of the names that comes up rather quickly is Bill Belichick. The NFL legend has been without a job this season after a strange offseason saw several teams, who were actively looking to hire, pass on Belichick. For a while, it seemed like Belichick would land in Atlanta with the Falcons, but Atlanta passed on the Patriots legend in favor of Raheem Morris.

So, why did the Falcons pass on Belichick and why is he a bad hire for the Saints and Jets? Well, it goes back to Belichick’s Patriots days after Tom Brady left. Belichick and Brady were synonymous with one another. They were constantly winning Super Bowls and felt like a truly unstoppable force. It was the greatest QB of all time and the greatest head coach of all time. A true dynamic duo.

So, after Brady left in 2020 for Tampa Bay, many expected Belichick to continue his winning ways. But that wasn’t the case. Belichick had just one winning season in his four years without Brady. His best season was 10-7 and the closest he got to the playoffs was a loss in the 2021 wild card game. He also never won the division.

So, what was the difference? He didn’t have an all-time great quarterback. The question surrounding Belichick now is can he get it done without a quarterback that has been called the greatest of all time? Aaron Rogers commands the Jets and could be a good match talent-wise for Belichick, but it’s unlikely that Rogers, who is seen as a diva, would fall in line with Belichick, who often demands robotic-like control of his players.

It’s also unlikely, based on his last four seasons, that Belichick would have success with Derrick Carr in New Orleans. Carr is not a bad quarterback and can be a great one with the right head wearing the headset. But, Carr out-performed Patriots QBs each of Belichick’s Brady-less seasons when he was with sub-par teams. Could Belichick really elevate Carr’s game when he couldn’t do the same for other QBs? Mac Jones was under Belichick for three of his last four seasons and saw a consistent decline in his performance.

Essentially, Belichick’s style of coaching is old, outdated, and doesn’t work with many young players. The Jets and Saints both have player-led teams with a veteran quarterback at the helm, leading a locker room filled to the brim with young talent. To have a head coach come in a try to change the way the organization runs is a bad idea.
