THOMASVILLE- Thomas University’s Division of Education received a $56,000 Dyslexia Endorsement Grant from the Georgia Department of Education.
The grant will assist K-12 teachers with tuition, fees, and books as they pursue Dyslexia Endorsement Certification during the 2024-25 school year. The Dyslexia Endorsement Program prepares teachers to recognize the characteristics of dyslexia and support students with dyslexia in the classroom.
“Researchers and educators are continuing to learn more about how all children learn to read and which teaching methods are most useful, Dr. Susan Lynn, Division of Education Chair, said. “Many students with learning differences do not fit the requirements for special education services. This makes it critically important for all teachers to learn how to instruct students who learn differently, like those with dyslexia. While dyslexia is quite common, affecting 20% of the population and representing 80-90% of all those with learning disabilities, to date, many educators are underprepared to screen, diagnose, and accommodate students with dyslexia.”
Thomas University has been receiving Dyslexia Endorsement Grant funding for the last two years, which has since totaled $175,000. In the last two years of grant funding, 64 teachers have completed the Dyslexia Endorsement Program through Thomas University.”
The graduates have gone on to teach at a variety of school districts in rural, urban, and suburban communities in Georgia.
