THOMASVILLE—On Saturday, Pebble Hill Plantation brought back a favorite outdoor event for running enthusiasts: the Quail Trail 5K.

Returning last year for the 40th anniversary of Pebble Hill Plantation being open to the public, the run saw a massive turnout of 159 individuals enjoying a scenic run through the old barn and gravel pathways scattered throughout the plantation.

“We had almost 200 participants last year, so we knew we had to bring this back,” said Lori Everett, Director of Development for Pebble Hill Plantation. “We want this to be an annual thing.”

The course was certified by USA Track and Field and served as one of the many qualifying runs for individuals who hope to eventually race in a larger marathon.

“We got so much positive feedback,” said Everett. “We loved hearing how much everyone enjoyed the course. It has multiple surfaces; it contains gravel, clay, grass, and asphalt. It’s a challenging course with a lot up uphill.”

However, runners were up to the challenge.

Overall, Leonardo Canete took home men’s 1st place with a time of 17:47. Rachel NeSmith followed up shortly after, clocking in a time of 21:09, taking home women’s 1st place overall.

Canete was also the Men’s 40+ winner, while C. D claimed the Women’s 40+ title, with a time of 27:18.

Winners were given beautiful, silver engraved trays to display. The first dog to cross the finish line also received a treat jar that his owner got to take home.

Everett thanked those who ran, explaining the money raised from the Quail Trail 5K supports the Pebble Hill Preservation Fund while helping maintain and operate the 3,000+ acres of the property.

“Any immediate needs, this event supports,” she said. “This year, we raised almost $15,000 for preservation efforts.”

For those who missed the Quail Trail 5K, but still are seeking opportunities to partake in the activities at Pebble Hill Plantation, Catherine Ledyard will be sharing from her children’s book “Pageant’s Miraculous Journey” on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Stable Courtyard.

Along with her reading, members of the Live Oak Hounds staff will be on-site to share the traditions and history of fox hunting. Additionally, a foxhound from the Like Oak Hounds pack will be the special guest, with children’s fox and hound-themed arts and crafts and nature activities to participate in.
