THOMASVILLE- On September 24, 2024, the Thomasville City School Board discussed additional security measures in light of a community-wide safety survey. Presented by Chief Academic Officer for Strategic Initiatives Jordan Williams, the survey showed that while an overwhelming majority of respondents feel schools are safe or very safe, some advocated for the addition of metal detectors and/or a clear bag policy. The Thomasville City School Board is considering the implementation of these measures to enhance security.
“In light of the tragic events that unfortunately occur too frequently in schools across the nation, we believe it is crucial to gather input from our community stakeholders. School safety is a never-ending, constantly improving process, and we will continue to consider all options to keep our students safe,” said Williams.
The district currently utilizes advanced systems such as the Centegix alert system and Blaze door reinforcements. Additionally, the board approved hiring an additional School Resource Officer and formed a district safety committee, which includes principals, teachers, community members, law enforcement, and board office personnel. The district is also collaborating with the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA) for further resources.
Superintendent Dr. Scott Sweeting added, “Our students’ safety is our top priority, and we are unwavering in our commitment to creating a secure learning environment. We are continuously evaluating and enhancing our safety protocols, ensuring that every child feels protected and supported while at school. Together with our dedicated staff, parents, and community, we strive to foster a safe atmosphere where every student can thrive.”
