THOMASVILLE- Thomasville Entertainment Foundation’s free family series opens on Sunday, October 27, with an outdoor concert featuring a unique musical ensemble, Quarteto Nuevo.
TEF invites the community to bring their lawn chairs or spread a blanket under the oaks at the Thomasville Center for the Arts and enjoy an afternoon performance that is both unique and family friendly.
Quarteto Nuevo merges western classical, eastern European folk, Latin and jazz music with an organic roots feel and a contemporary groove. The ensemble’s razor-sharp precision is enhanced by jazzy interludes, lightly rumbling percussion motifs and mesmerizing rhythms.
Representing different world cultures and musical styles, the quartet’s unique instrumentation– Damon Zick on soprano saxophone and alto flute, Jacob Szekely on cello, Kenton Youngstrom on guitar and Felipe Fraga playing hand percussion – richly colors their wide-ranging repertoire.
The quartet was recently awarded a SouthArts Jazz Road Creative Residency grant in support of its CREED (Compose, Research, Execute, Engage, Document) project, which explores the connection between jazz and geographical and cultural locations. The project resulted in a suite of works composed to invoke a unique feeling of place for a number of U.S. states, with a long-term goal of having movements written for all 50 states.
“We can’t wait to share this fun, unique event with our community,” said TEF President Peggy Brady. “You’ll be surrounded by fall breezes and worlds of music, and all you need to do is bring your favorite people of all ages – for free!”
The TEF Family Series is made possible by generous grants and gifts honoring TEF’s longtime artistic leader Janice Faircloth by the Parker Poe Charitable Trust, Emily and Bill Searcy Charitable Trust, Dr. & Mrs. Douglas C. McPherson, the late Diane Williams Parker and other friends of TEF.
TEF’s Concert Series is presented in cooperation with the Thomasville Center for the Arts. Interested concertgoers can contact the TEF office at (229) 226-7404 or visit www.TEFconcerts.com for more information.
