TALLAHASSEE- The best word to describe the incredible amount of controversy and turmoil inside the walls of Florida State University is simply chaos.

Amidst a snub from the CFP, a bevy of opt outs and a lawsuit against the ACC another bombshell has been dropped. Second string QB and current starter Tate Rodemaker has announced that he is entering he transfer portal and will not play in the Orange Bowl.

The redshirt junior has been with the Noles for four years and took over the starting job for Jordan Travis after the phenom went down with a leg injury against North Alabama. Rodemaker helped lead FSU to a win over in-state rival Florida, but was ruled out of the ACC championship game after a head injury.

This isn’t a sign for Seminole fans to panic, however. In fact, it is simply the natural progression of moves coming from the Noles coaching staff. It’s no secret that the Florida State coaching staff has been pursuing quarterbacks in the transfer portal. The Noles want to stay competitive and, despite the fact that they beat an SEC opponent with Rodemaker and won an ACC title with third stringer and freshman Brock Glenn, they simply won’t be competitive on a national stage with those guys.

The Noles have had official visits taken by highly recruited transfers Cameron Ward out of Washington State and former Clemson QB DJ Uiagalelei, who spent last season at Oregon State. Sources say that FSU is likely to land one of the two and if Rodemaker want’s to start in his last two years of eligibility, he would be best served somewhere other than Tallahassee.

In the short term this is bad for Florida State. It means that any chance the Noles had against the Georgia Bulldogs in the Orange Bowl has petered out like a weak campfire. Brock Glenn only completed eight out of 21 passes for 55 yards in the ACC Championship game versus Louisville and, with running back Trey Benson opting out for the NFL draft, the Noles won’t have much of a run game to fall back on.

In the long term, this is actually good for the Florida State. It means they can clear the way for Brock Glenn and give him a solid college football veteran like Ward or Uiagalelei to help Glenn improve before he takes the reins. After all, Glenn is just a freshman and has already played in an ACC title game and is about to face Georgia. You can criticize his performance against Louisville, but there is no denying the kid can play.

He was a four star recruit out of Memphis, Tennessee and threw for almost 4,000 yards for Lausanne Collegiate High School. He also threw for over 1,400 yards in his junior season and 1,500 in his senior season with 57 career touchdowns and just 13 interceptions. You don’t do that if you’re not a good quarterback. Glenn will be just fine and the addition of a veteran QB could accelerate his growth as he prepares for a starting role with the Seminoles.
