THOMASVILLE – Punxsutawney Phil is not the only being who might see his shadow this year. Thomas County Central High School Work-Based Learning program plans to host a Groundhog Job Shadow Day this February, allowing local high school students to observe area professionals in their work environment.
The national WBL event, scheduled for Feb. 1, 2023, is a chance for students nationwide to shadow workers in various fields. To help make the event a success on the local level, TCCHS currently seeks businesses/industries who want to help out by allowing students to shadow their employees.
“Job Shadow Day provides an invaluable opportunity for students to step into the real world to gain insight into diverse careers and industries,” TCCHS WBL Coordinator Brandi Miranda said. “This hands-on experience goes beyond textbooks, allowing students to explore their interests, ask questions and witness day-to-day operations.”
Professions anticipated to offer shadowing opportunities include marketing, real estate, retail, automotive, banking, agriculture and medical positions.
The Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society is a frequent collaborator with TCCHS WBL and has opened its doors to previous job shadow participants.
“The Thomas County Central High School’s Work-Based Learning program is not just about acquiring knowledge; it’s about empowering students with real-world skills, fostering a bridge between education and industry,” Executive Director Chandler Giddes said. “It’s more than a program—it’s a gateway to discovering our passions, honing our skills, and embracing the thrill of real-world application.”
The organization intends to participate in the 2024 event, too.
“Together, we’re able to shape future leaders and innovators, creating a pathway for success beyond the classroom,” Giddes said. “Because education is not just about what you know, but what you can do with what you know.”
The deadline to register is Jan. 5, 2023.
“By bridging the gap between classroom learning and the professional world, job shadowing helps students make informed career choices, fostering a deeper understanding of skills and knowledge required in various fields,” Miranda said. “I encourage area employers to take part in this unique experience sure to provide positive learning moments for everyone.”
