FSU back in the CFP, Buckeyes fall to #6

Though most Florida State fans spent their Saturday night praying that new QB Tate Rodemaker could get them a big win over Florida, all Seminole eyes were glued to the tv at noon as Michigan took on Ohio State. The reason? Who ever lost that game would be out of the CFP and, with a win over Florida, the Noles would take their rightful place in the top four.

Well, that is exactly what happened. Stellar defense and running back Trey Benson carried Florida State past the Gators and Michigan forced their way by Ohio State. Now, after the official rankings were released, the Noles have moved back into that familiar four spot. The top four still look relatively similar with one key difference. Washington now sits in front of Florida State at three. Georgia and Michigan secured the one and two slot, while the Buckeyes have fallen to number six behind Oregon. As it stands, the top four positions in the CFP are taken up by the only undefeated teams left in the top 25, outside of Liberty.

However, the last four team College Football Playoff is far from set in stone. All four squads still have to face tough competition in their respective conference title games. Michigan will have the easier test against number 16 Iowa in the Big Ten, while Florida State will take on number 14 Louisville, who just became a lot less menacing after a bad loss to Kentucky.

The more intriguing match ups come by way of the SEC and Pac-12.

In what could be the last Pac-12 championship, the west coast will get a top five match up between Washington and Oregon. A battle between Heisman contending quarterbacks, Oregon is heavily favored by ESPN, but don’t let the odds fool you. This game will be worth watching for any college football fan.

The Ducks are coming off a dominating win over in-state rival Oregon State, while Washington beat out Washington State in a close battle in Seattle. The win caps off just the second perfect season in history for the Huskies. Washington defeated Oregon earlier in the year, a top ten matchup that the Huskies took 36-33. It was a statement victory for the Huskies that let the rest of the nation know that they were legit. Now, Washington will look to prove themselves again and show that they belong in the College Football Playoff.

In Atlanta, the top ranked Georgia Bulldogs will face number eight Alabama. This will be the third time in six years these two program have met for an SEC title showdown and the ninth year in a row that either Georgia or Alabama have played for a conference championship. Georgia is a slight favorite in the game, but this will be a very interesting match up. Since the Texas loss, the Tide has come into its own. Jalen Milroe seems top have settled in at quarterback and Bama showed some real grit in a tough game against rival Auburn. Meanwhile, Georgia is looking dominant. They’ve taken down three top 25 teams in the last four weeks, including a top ten Ole Miss squad. There are several intriguing playoff consequences that could be determined by this game.

The simplest outcome would be Georgia winning the SEC title. The Bulldogs would remain the top team in the nation and Bama would drop a spot in the rankings a go to a good bowl game. The more chaotic options appears if Alabama wins. If the Tide rolls over Georgia the committee will be forced to chose between a one loss Georgia that has been either number one or two all season or a one loss SEC champion Alabama. Even more chaotic, the committee could leave the SEC out of the College Football Playoff all together.
