THOMASVILLE- Thomas County Central High School cheerleaders held their inaugural Best of the Nest Game Day Invitational on Saturday morning, welcoming in multiple schools to see who was the loudest and proudest of their high school team.
In attendance were Douglas County High School, Dutchtown High School, Brooks County High School, Haralson County High School, Mary Persons High School, Fayette County High School, Lagrange High School and Stockbridge High School, as well as TCC.
Head Coach Meggin Nix was thrilled with the turnout and thankful to TCC administrators for allowing the team to host the event and showcase the skills the cheer team has been working on.
“We are super thankful the school system allowed us to host and that we had so many teams come to our first competition,” Nix said. “It’s definitely more than we expected and we are just really grateful.”
While TCC was competing in the Invitational, along with the other teams, they were not eligible to win. Nix explained that the girls would be scored by the judges so they could gain feedback to see what they needed to work on for the next Invitational, which will be held December 2nd at Effingham County.
“We really just want the feedback to guide us for our next Invitational and help better prepare us for state,” Nix said. “We want to see anything that needs to be fixed and how we can showcase better or get the crowd more involved. We really just want to improve before state, so we can hopefully make finals and place.”
Regardless of the judge’s feedback, Nix said she was pleased with the team’s performance. However, she does plan on reviewing video footage, which gives her a better view of everyone.
“As coaches, we sit in the corner. So with nine mats, we are only able to see a very limited view,” she explained. “It’s hard to see to the deep, far left of the mat.”
From Nix’s view, she said the timing looked really good and the cheerleaders continued to perform, despite a music snafu.
“They did exactly what they are supposed to do,” she said. “They maintained their composure and I was really proud of them for that.”
When it comes to what Nix wants to see out of the cheerleaders heading into the next competition, she said she hopes to see sharper motions.
“We do need to work on our motions,” she said. “I thought stunts looked really well, but we will continue to work on the timing of those, making sure we are going up and coming down at the same time, but I’m just really pleased with the overall progress.”
Nix’s hope is that the team’s progress leads them to state, which will be on December 8th in Atlanta at Georgia State’s campus.
“We just really hope we have a lot of Yellow Jacket voices in the audience supporting us,” she concluded.
